1970 Plymouth Hemi Superbird // Mecum Indy 2017


Truth be told, the limited-production Plymouth Superbird was born to have a Hemi under the hood. Still, not many of them received that engine. In fact, the racing regulations under which the ‘bird flew in the final months of 1969 required the factory to build almost 2,000 new-for-1970 models before January 1. In order to keep the sticker cost down and the Lynch Road assembly line active, a majority of those cars were 440 CI V-8 powered. Of course, guys like Richard Petty and Pete Hamilton used Hemi power on high-banked racetracks, but just 135 of the code-A13 Superbird package cars sent ol’ King Kong down the highway in a Plymouth wing.
